Two INCREDIBLE Thrift Finds and One Cautionary Tale

Take a Seat…

A Reddit user scored an incredible deal by purchasing a $28 leather chair with a headrest and ottoman from a thrift store, later identified as a valuable mid-century modern Mr. Chair model by Plycraft Inc., worth nearly $5,000 today. The original price for Mr. Chair in the 1960s was around $200, equivalent to about $2,000 in 2024. While such rare finds are not common, shopping secondhand offers significant benefits, such as reducing waste and environmental impact, especially considering that a large portion of furniture waste ends up in landfills. Choosing secondhand furniture helps mitigate the environmental damage caused by fast furniture.

When You’re Left Holding the Gold Bars…A Cautionary Tale

In June 2022, Florida retirees Phil and Gay Courter were unexpectedly arrested in England on European warrants for charges of money laundering, organized crime, and trafficking cultural goods, specifically gold bars salvaged from a French shipwreck in 1746. The trouble began in 1986 when they agreed to hold onto the gold bars for a French couple, believing everything was legal, and even encouraged a televised display of the bars on Antiques Roadshow in 1999. Decades later, their attempt to sell some of the gold at auction led to their arrest after a French investigator linked them to the shipwrecked treasure. The Courters, who claimed ignorance of the gold's illegal status, spent over $300,000 to resolve their legal issues and return to the US.
